Monstera standleyana, an easy-to-grow climber

Monstera standleyana is a tropical plant that grows in Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama).

Because of its resemblance to philodendron, another member of the Araceae family, Monstera standleyana is also nicknamed Philodendron cobra.

How to recognize Monstera standleyana

In the wild, Monstera standleyana reaches a height of 6 meters. In pots and indoors, it can reach between 60 and 150 centimetres in height and 90 centimetres in width.

Its leaves are oval and elongated. Their length varies between 15 and 20 centimetres. Dark green, they have a glossy appearance and are adorned with white and silver stripes or patterns. These take the form of dots, sometimes splashes.

Like Monstera obliqua and monstera dubia, Philodendron cobra is toxic to children and pets.

Our maintenance tips

Monstera standleyana are not difficult to care for. Regular watering, a little moisture, a pot optimized for drainage and a little fertilizer are all that's needed.

WateringWatering

Water your plant when the surface of the substrate is dry to the extent of three centimeters.

Use non-calcareous water at room temperature, such as rainwater or filtered mains water.

After watering, drain off any water that collects in the saucer or planter. It can rot the roots.

SpraySpray

If the air in your home is dry, spray the leaves of your plant with non-calcareous water at room temperature.

RepottingRepotting

In spring, transfer your Monstera standleyana to a larger pot, so that it can continue to grow.
Re-pot your Monstera standleyana to give it more space. Choose a pierced terracotta or plastic pot that will allow it to continue growing.

At the bottom, place a draining potting soil and then transplant your plant. Pack the rootball to prevent it from becoming too airy.

Monstera standleyana like to climb. You can support their development by providing them with a stake to hang on.

FertilizationFertilization

You can stimulate the development of your plant during its growth phase, in spring and summer, with fertilizer.
Addliquid green plant fertilizer to watering water.

CleaningCleaning

Dust prevents leaves from absorbing light and slows photosynthesis. You can use a brush or feather duster to clean the foliage.

PinchPinch

Pinch your Monstera standleyana during its growing season.
There may be several reasons why you want to deadhead your Monstera standleyana: to contain its growth, to multiply the plant or to stimulate its development.

Use your fingers or sharp, disinfected secateurs to cut between two knots.

Wear gloves when handling your plant.

CuttingCutting

Cutting is carried out during the strong growth phase, generally in spring and early summer.
Locate a node on the stem with at least one leaf and aerial roots. Cut off two centimetres below with clean, sharp secateurs.
Place your cutting in a glass filled with water at room temperature. Make sure you submerge the knots, which will form the roots.

Place in a bright spot away from direct sunlight. Change the water regularly to keep it clear until the roots appear.
