Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame', a Monstera with large fenestrations

Legend has it that the very first Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame' was discovered in the plant collection of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. Its origin is uncertain. Some botanists consider it a hybrid of Epipremnum pinnatum. Others believe that the collector found it in the wild and took it from the rainforest to grow it indoors.

How to recognize Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame'?

Monstera 'Burle Marx' Flame' is a climbing perennial. It grows to a height of two meters.

The flexible green stem bears aerial roots at the internodes. These enable the plant to cling and climb, but also to capture moisture.

The young leaves, long, narrow and with a pointed apex, resemble flames. Fleshy, they are bright, glossy green. As they mature, they develop large fenestrations from their midrib.

Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame' has only been studied and cultivated by professional and amateur gardeners since the early 1980s. We don't yet know what its flowering looks like. But it's a safe bet that the inflorescence will resemble that of Monstera pinnatipartita and Monstera praetermissa. It would then consist of a pale spathe surrounding a yellow or pale green flower spike.

Like other plants in the Araceae family, Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame' is toxic. Its sap contains calcium oxalate crystals. These can cause digestive problems and skin irritation. Keep your specimen out of reach of your dog or cat, and wear gloves when repotting.

CuttingCutting

Cutting is carried out during the strong growth phase, generally in spring and early summer.
Locate a node on your plant, if possible with an aerial root and at least one leaf. Using a clean, disinfected tool, such as a pair of scissors or pruning shears, cut two centimetres below the node.
Once you've obtained your graft, place it in a vase or glass filled withwater at room temperature. Make sure the node is completely submerged.
