Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson', the pink-leaved Goeppertia
Looking for a rare plant? A specimen that will make your collection exceptional? With its pink foliage, Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson' could be just what you're looking for. But there's no need to scour the Brazilian forest to find it. This Marantaceae is a cultivar, born of Goeppertia picturata and the imagination of a few crazy gardeners.
How to recognize Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson'?
Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson' grows to no more than 50 centimetres in height and width. It is a rhizomatous plant with a bushy habit.
It's impossible to confuse Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson' with its cousin goeppertia picturata 'Argentea! While both have leathery, oval blades with purple undersides, the upper surface of 'Crimson' is dark pink with green edges.
Its color is not the only eccentricity of Goeppertia picturata 'Crimson'. Every day, at dusk, it straightens its leaves. In the morning, it spreads them out again. It's not clear why Goeppertia and other praying plants indulge in this curious maneuver. Some think it's to protect themselves from predators, others to reduce water evaporation.
While scientists are still debating the value of nyctinasty, all agree that Goeppertia are non-toxic. You can handle them or leave them within the reach of young children and pets without fear.
