Syagrus romanzoffiana, the queen's palm tree

What if he were the most beautiful? With its crown of feather-like palms, Syagrus romanzoffiana is for many the most beautiful of palms. But for gourmets, this variety is of no interest! Its fruit is inedible!

How to recognize the queen palm, Syagrus romanzoffiana?

Syagrus romanzoffiana is a palm that grows to over twelve meterstall in its natural environment. It has an upright growth habit. In pots or indoors, it grows more modestly, rarely exceeding two meters in height.

The stipe is generally single, but can also be multiple. Thicker than syagrus weddelliana, it reaches a diameter of 40 centimetres. Its greyish bark bears ring-shaped leaf scars.

A crown of green, arching palms crowns the false trunk. The pinnate leaves are divided into very fine leaflets and measure up to 4.5 m in length.

The Queen Palm blooms in late summer. The yellow flowers are grouped in highly branched inflorescences, up to a meter long.

The fruits are yellow ovoid berries, two to three centimetres long. They are inedible.

However, the plant is not toxic on contact or ingestion. You can grow Syagrus romanzoffiana, even if you live with young children or pets.

Our maintenance tips

Syagrus romanzoffiana are particularly sensitive to cold and excess water. When watered regularly and protected from frost, these plants are easy to care for.

WateringWatering

Syagrus romanzoffiana appreciate constant but moderate humidity. Before watering your plant, make sure it needs it by touching the surface of the potting soil. If two or three centimetres of the surface is dry, you can water.

If you can, use non-calcareous water such as rainwater or filtered water.

Make sure the water doesn't stagnate in the saucer or planter.

SpraySpray

Mist foliage to increase humidity and repel pests. Always spray with rainwater. Tap water is too hard and leaves white marks on the leaves.

RepottingRepotting

In spring, transfer your Syagrus romanzoffiana to a larger pot, so that it can continue to grow.
Choose a deep, pierced pot. This will prevent the container from tipping under the weight of your Syagrus romanzoffiana and allow the root system to develop.

Mix green potting soil (50%), sand (25%) and heather soil (25%). Place a layer at the bottom of the pot. Plant your Syagrus romanzoffiana in the center and add substrate. Stop a few centimetres below the edge to form a watering trough.

Water copiously to expel air bubbles and facilitate rooting.

FertilizationFertilization

You can stimulate the development of your plant during its growth phase, in spring and summer, with fertilizer.
To promote the growth of your syagrus romanzoffiana, use a green plant fertilizer.

CleaningCleaning

Remove dust from foliage with a clean, damp cloth. This will enable your plant to take full advantage of the sunlight.

PrunePrune

To encourage the growth of your Syagrus romanzoffiana, prune regularly.
Remove dry leaves. Cut them off flush with the main stem using pruning shears.

PlantationPlantation

Choose a secluded, sunny location. Half-shade may also be suitable. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Soak your Syagrus romanzoffiana to rehydrate it.

Prepare a mixture of garden soil (50%), sand (25%) and compost or heather soil (25%). Place a layer of this substrate at the bottom of the hole. Plant your Syagrus romanzoffiana and fill in with your mixture. Use the remaining soil to form a watering trough.

Water to encourage rooting and eliminate air bubbles. You can also mulch the base with pebbles or organic matter to retain moisture and reduce watering.

SeedlingSeedling

Your seedlings need warmth. Summer is the best time to get started.
Soak seeds for 48 hours in lukewarm water.
Obtain a deep pierced pot with a capacity of at least one liter.

Fill it with a mixture of heather soil (50%) and sand (50%).

Plant one or two seeds in each pot. Bury them two centimetres deep.

Seedlings take better if they are stifled. Enclose your pot in a mini-mirror or cover it with a plastic bag or half a clear bottle. Place in a bright, warm place (at least 25°C).

Keep your seedlings moist by misting the substrate regularly. Aerate for a few minutes each day to prevent rotting.
