Philodendron Xanadu, a philodendron like no other

Philodendron xanadu grows in the tropical forests of southern Brazil and Paraguay. A member of the Araceae family, it is distinguished from other philodendrons by its bushy habit and highly dissected leaves.

How to recognize Philodendron xanadu?

Philodendron xanadu is a perennial with a bushy habit. Wider than it is tall at maturity, it reaches 1.60 m in height and 2 m in width.

Although Philodendron xanadu is not a creeping plant, it sometimes has aerial roots. These appear on the short green stem.

The leaves grow on long petioles. They measure between 15 and 45 centimetres. Most Philodendrons, like philodendron 'Pink Princess have cordate leaf blades. But those of Philodendron xanadu are cut into narrow, regular lobes. There are between 15 and 20 lobes per leaf.

In the botanical variety, the glossy leaves are plain and dark green. But there are also cultivars with yellow foliage, such as Philodendron xanadu Gold, or variegated white, like Philodendron xanadu "White variegated".

In the wild, Philodendron xanadu blooms in spring and summer. Blooms take the form of a narrow, dark-red spathe.

Philodendron xanadu is toxic if ingested. Keep it out of the reach of young children and pets. The plant can also cause skin irritation if in contact with the sap. Remember to wear gloves when pruning.

Our maintenance tips

Philodendron xanadu are hardy plants. They require only part-shade exposure and copious watering.

WateringWatering

Water your Philodendron xanadu when the soil surface is at least three centimetres dry.

Use non-calcareous water at room temperature, such as rainwater.

After 20 minutes, empty the planter or saucer. Stagnant water can rot the roots.

RepottingRepotting

Every spring, repot your Philodendron xanadu to give it more space.
Choose a container large enough to allow roots to develop.

To promote drainage, make sure the bottom of the pot is perforated. Place a layer of clay balls or gravel, followed by potting soil for green plants. You can even mix in some perlite.

Place your Philodendron xanadu in this new pot and water.

FertilizationFertilization

To promote the growth of your Philodendron xanadu, apply fertilizer in spring and summer.
Addliquid green plant fertilizer to watering water.

CleaningCleaning

When dust accumulates on the leaves, the plant slows down its photosynthesis process and its growth. To keep your Philodendron xanadu healthy, clean its foliage with a damp, clean cloth.

Philodendron xanadu are toxic plants. Wash your hands after touching your plant, or wear gloves when handling it.

PrunePrune

To encourage the growth of your Philodendron xanadu, prune regularly.
Remove wilted and yellowed leaves.

PlantationPlantation

When the risk of frost has passed, it's time to plant.
Soak the rootball of your Philodendron xanadu. Meanwhile, dig a hole two or three times as large.

Plant your specimen in the center and fill in with your garden soil. You can add sand to improve drainage and compost to enrich the substrate. Water generously.

You can then mulch the base to protect it from the cold in winter and keep the soil cool in summer.

CuttingCutting

Cutting is carried out during the strong growth phase, generally in spring and early summer.
Take a portion of stem with three or four nodes. Remove the leaves at the base.

Cut your cutting with a clean, sharp tool, such as secateurs or scissors.
Immerse your stem in a glass of water at room temperature. Place the cutting in a sunny, draught-free spot. Remember to change the water to keep it clear.

When the roots are at least three centimetres long, you can repot your young shoot.
