Philodendron Brasil, a hybrid with variegated foliage

As its name suggests, Philodendron Brasil comes from... Brazil! But you're more likely to come across this Aracae on a florist's stall than in the Amazon rainforest. The plant is a natural hybrid of Philodendron hederaceum. It was discovered by a Brazilian who saw in its evergreen foliage the colors of his country's flag.

How to recognize Philodendron Brasil?

Philodendron Brasil is a green plant with a drooping habit. It doesn't grow taller than 20 centimetres. But it can reach a spread of 55 centimetres, and its vines can measure up to 60 centimetres in length.

The five-centimeter-diameter stems are smooth. When young, they are pink. Over time, they turn orange and then light green. Each node supports a stalk about seven centimetres long.

Suitable for pot and indoor cultivation, Philodendron Brasil's leaves are ten centimetres long and eight centimetres wide. They are heart-shaped with an elongated tip. The smooth, almost waxy blades are green on both sides. But the upper surface has a light green or yellow center. When the plant receives enough light, the patterns extend to the veins and margins.

Like philodendron Lemon Lime, Philodendron Brasil does not flower. Nor does it produce fruit.

It does, however, secrete calcium crystals, a substance toxic to animals and humans, which are found in the leaves, stems and sap. Keep your plant out of reach of children and four-legged friends. And remember to wear gloves when handling it.

Our maintenance tips

Philodendrons Brasil are not difficult to care for. Regular watering, a little moisture, a pot optimized for drainage and a little fertilizer are all that's needed.

WateringWatering

Water your Philodendron Brasil when the soil surface is at least three centimetres dry.

Use non-calcareous water at room temperature, such as rainwater.

After 20 minutes, empty the planter or saucer. Stagnant water can rot the roots.

SpraySpray

Fogging helps to increase humidity and prevent attacks by mites or red spiders. Spray foliage with non-calcareous water at room temperature.

RepottingRepotting

In spring, transfer your Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' to a larger pot, so that it can continue to grow.
Re-pot your Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' to give it more space. Choose a pierced terracotta or plastic pot that will allow it to continue growing.

At the bottom, place a draining potting soil and then transplant your plant. Pack the rootball to prevent it from becoming too airy.

Philodendrons Brasil like to climb. You can support their development by providing them with a stake to hang on.

FertilizationFertilization

You can stimulate the development of your plant during its growth phase, in spring and summer, with fertilizer.
Addgreen plant fertilizer to watering water.

CleaningCleaning

Clean the top and bottom of the leaves with a damp sponge. This removes dust and keeps pests at bay.

PinchPinch

Pinch your Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' during its growing season.
Philodendrons Brasil don't cut themselves. But you can pinch the ends of the stems to densify the plant and create new branches.

Your Philodendron Brasil is toxic. Wear gloves during the operation to avoid skin rashes.

CuttingCutting

Cutting is carried out during the strong growth phase, generally in spring and early summer.
Select a healthy stem. Take a portion of about ten centimetres with at least one leaf and one aerial root.

Always use a clean instrument to prevent the spread of disease, and a sharp one to facilitate healing.
Soak your cutting in a glass of water at room temperature. Only the stem end should be immersed. Change the water every three days to keep it clear.

Place your cutting in a bright spot away from direct sunlight.
