Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon', a hibiscus with double flowers
Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon' is derived from hibiscus syriacus. Like it, it belongs to the Malvaceae family. But the pupil surpasses the master. This cultivar blooms twice as spectacularly.
How to recognize Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon'?
Hibiscus syriacus Lavender Chiffon is an upright, branched shrub. Smaller than marsh Hibiscus and hibiscus rosa-sinensis, it doesn't grow more than two meters high and as wide.
Its soft , hairless green foliage contrasts with the gray, cracked bark of the trunk and branches. The lanceolate or oval leaf blades have serrated margins. Deciduous, they drop off in early autumn and reappear in May.
Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon' flowers from July to October. Trumpet-shaped flowers, at least ten centimetres across, bloom in the leaf axils. Their delicate mauve-pink petals are not their only attraction. Their deep pink heart reveals a miniature, five-petaled flower. The flowers last no more than two days. But throughout the summer, new buds open to replace faded flowers.
Hibiscus 'Lavender Chiffon' is non-toxic to humans and pets. Its flowers are even used in cooking for their tangy taste.
Our maintenance tips
Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon are easy plants. Once they have taken root, they require little care. Just remember to water them daily in hot weather.
Watering
Water when the surface of the substrate is dry, using room-temperature, non-calcareous water. If you can, use rainwater. If you don't have rainwater, water with mains water that has been left to stand.
After watering, empty any stagnant water from the saucer. It could rot the roots.
Spray
Your hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon hates wet foliage. You must not mist the plant.
Repotting
Every spring, repot your Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon' to give it more space.
Obtain a perforated pot. Place a bed of clay balls or gravel at the bottom for drainage.
Then pour in a layer of soil. Choose a rich substrate, such as potting soil for flowering plants. Plant hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon and fill in.
Press down and water copiously to eliminate air bubbles and facilitate rooting.
Fertilization
To promote the growth of your Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon', apply fertilizer in spring and summer.
Apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants every two weeks to encourage flowering.
Prune
Your Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon' is flowering on this year's wood. Prune generously (about 20% of the shrub) to ensure abundant flowering.
Using clean pruning shears, cut off side shoots eight or ten centimetres from their starting point. Reduce the height of the remaining branches by a third.
Remove inward-pointing twigs to let the sun shine through.
Plantation
When the risk of frost has passed, it's time to plant.
Find a sunny spot protected from the wind.
Dig a hole three times the size of the root ball. Meanwhile, soak your Hibiscus syriacus 'Lavender Chiffon' to rehydrate it.
Add clay balls or gravel to your garden soil to improve drainage. Line the bottom of the hole with compost, followed by a layer of substrate. Plant your shrub in the center. The root ball should reach ground level. Fill in with your mixture and tamp down.
Water copiously to eliminate air bubbles and encourage rooting.
Cutting
Take a current-year shoot about ten centimeters long. It should have no flower buds.
Thin out the lower part and keep only two or three leaves at the top.
To increase your chances of success, you can dip the lower end in cuttings hormone.
Prepare a bucket filled with potting soil. Make a pre-hole with a pen and plant your cutting in the center. Push the branch in deeply, so that two-thirds of the graft is buried.
Place your cutting in the open air, in partial shade and protected from frost.
Water regularly to keep the substrate moist.
