How to control aphids?
Aphids are winged insects belonging to the Aphidoidea superfamily.
They measure between one and four millimeters. Most often green, they can also be black, yellow, pink or gray.
They have a proboscis with which they pierce plant stems to extract sap. When they moult, they leave behind a thin skin, the exuviae.
Contributing factors
Aphids proliferate from March to September, during the egg-laying period. The absence of predators, such as ladybugs or hoverflies, favors their proliferation.
They give priority to plants weakened by poor soil fertility and those fed with nitrogen-rich fertilizers. In these cases, sap is easier to reach.
These pests attack all crops. However, they are particularly fond of roses and fruit trees such as raspberries and strawberries.
How it works
Aphids are biting and sucking insects. They attack the stems and leaves of plants.
When their proboscis collects sap, they swallow a little saliva. This carries diseases and viruses harmful to plants.
Like whiteflies, aphids discharge their excrement in the form of small, sweet-tasting balls called honeydew. This substance remains on the plant's surface and leads to the development of a fungus called fumagine.
Symptoms
Plants invaded by aphids are easy to recognize. Deprived of sap, leaves become discolored and dry.
Aphid saliva causes blisters on the stem bark.
Finally, if a black mold appears on the foliage, it's because fumago has set in.
Treatment
Insecticides are not the only recourse. You can treat your garden with natural methods.
To scare off aphids, spray leaves with a mixture of soap and water or olive oil and water. You can also apply a decoction of nettle, garlic and wormwood puree.
The scent of certain plants, such as lavender, common thyme, fennel, marigolds and mint, repels aphids. Other flowers, such as nasturtiums, attract them. By sacrificing a square, you divert the threat from your other plantings.
Finally, auxiliary insects, such as ladybugs, provide a natural and ecological defense against these invaders.
